In a competitive environment, how you pitch yourself to prospective employees matters. You want to position your company as the favorable option to candidates. Things like competitive benefit packages and company perks can help you stand out from other companies in your industry. These are typically things that could be found on a job listing to entice candidates to apply, but they don’t end there. 

Just as important as the job listing is the onboarding process. This is where you can go in depth about the different benefits offered. You want to keep your employees in that honeymoon phase— excited, motivated, and eager to learn— as long as possible. And an onboarding experience, good or bad, will sway a new employee's opinion of the company before they can even get up to speed on their responsibilities.

But of course, benefits don’t just apply to new hires. It’s not uncommon for established employees to want to make changes to their policies as their personal lives shift. As such, presenting benefits packages during company open enrollment periods is equally important as presenting them to the fresh eyes of new employees.

Start with a template

Make it interactive

Benefits are necessary, but sitting through open enrollment can be a snooze. How can you engage employees without calling them out in a room full of their colleagues? Make your presentation interactive. If it’s a new hire orientation, ask the new employees to send through a short bio and a few images that represent their life outside of the workplace, and include that in the deck so it feels personalized to them. 

Another great way to engage employees— especially if remote— is to hide easter eggs throughout the deck. Provide incentives (prizes) if they can spot all of the icons or hidden photos within the presentation to encourage them to pay attention to each slide. With this method, you’re keeping their focus on the screen so they’re retaining as much information as possible and aren’t following up a week later with questions.

Keep it light with appropriate work humor

Try poking fun at nuisances in the workplace, or pointing out challenges with benefits, but make sure it’s appropriate. By humanizing the experience, you’ll keep them intrigued and have less employees tuning out.

Like any presentation, visuals are your best asset (literally). Since most of us are visual learners, it’s important to include supporting images or graphics to help your audience retain the information. You’re probably presenting the deck live to new hires or existing employees looking to switch up their benefits, but part of the process is providing them with the materials necessary to make informed decisions. Some of the employees may want to take the information back to their families or partners before making a decision.
