Announcing the Spring 2021 Scholarship Winner!

What the scholarship means to Amelia

“I carry with me the lessons I’ve learned from my involvement in the Sky Island Chamber Society, from the courses in art and design I’ve attended both in my hometown and at ASU, and from the time I’ve dedicated to learning German and Russian. These lessons blend together, because all these different disciplines are the product of people’s inherent desire to communicate: to speak and have their ideas heard and understood by others regardless of their background. In continuing my education in Russian, the language of one of our country’s historic enemies, I hope to apply what I’ve learned about communication through a variety of media on a global scale, and work to curb some of the greatest threats facing our nation and our world from a standpoint of diplomacy. And I thank for their support, which has brought me closer than ever to achieving that goal.“

What the scholarship means to Emily

This pandemic has been a lesson in alchemy. We have all simultaneously learned that pain can be transformed. Likewise, design has the power to transform. Design is a powerful tool for empathy, understanding, and a reminder that we are all more alike than different; we can use this tool to spark change. has given me the ability to pursue graphic design from a space of expansion, removing financial weight so that I don’t have to carry it alone. Similarly, they also taught me the power of community and our ability to lift each other up; a lesson that I will bring to my work moving forward. The future is limitless and that is exciting.
